Only a few weeks before arrival of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission, which is to visit Belgrade and Serbia on 24th of August, Mr. Radovan Jelasic the Governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS), said that the Serbian Government is in delay with adoption of the package of economic measures. At this moment there are countries, which are implementing unpopular measures even without request by the IMF while it seems that, the Serbian Government do not have the strength for such a measures. In addition, the Governor pointed out that “The worst would be that the IMF comes, sets diagnosis, gives certain proposals, gets no precise replies, packs and leaves. The key question is what remedy we shall apply. If there is no agreement with the IMF there shall be no money either from the World Bank or from the EU. If we want the money, we have to do something in return”. In addition, Jelasic added, “the best would be that the Government cuts its expenditures now. Pays have to be cut. That how we are functioning now, cannot go on for too long“.He is completely sure that the main topics of talks with the IMF are going to be the VAT, tax on income and tax on property.
The mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is coming to Serbia in the second review of stand-buy arrangements. Representatives of the IMF will discuss with Government officials and the National Bank and with the private sector and academic circles. Mission will lead Mr. Albert Jeger who led the mission in Serbia in March when it was reached an agreement on credit arrangements with the IMF. The visit will be completed in early September. The IMF Board of Directors approved to Serbia 2.9 billion euros stand-buy arrangement on 15th of May, which will last until April 2011.
